Speedometers - an overview of the different versions

Not all speedometers are the same. Even if each of them displays the speed.

There is, as I'm sure you all know, not only the difference between mph and km/h and differences between the two fonts from 1969 to 1975 and beyond. No, there are also differences in the scales, in the design, in the different countries, changes depending on the gearbox and model.

You have to be very careful! But it's also very helpful to distinguish between exact car models or to determine whether the 4- or 5-speed gearbox has always been in the car or whether it wasn't an automatic.

But can you change the speedometer just like that? Not quite. Because even if there were almost no differences between 1969 and 1975, you can't simply install a speedometer from a 240Z in a 280Z. This is because the housings and brackets are completely different. The backs are different, as are the black housings.

Pretty complicated? Isn't it? I think so. Especially as I unfortunately haven't found suitable photos of all the models. But I still want to use this small collection to show you which variants and part numbers are available.

This overview seems overwhelming. But that's not all you need to know.

But to get an idea of the full extent of this speedometer research, it's worth taking a closer look at the following parts lists.Because it really isn't that easy to divide the speedometers into typeface and km/h vs. mph.

The following pages show the part numbers from the USA (1970-1978) and Japan (1969-1973).

But do you want to install a speedometer from a 240Z in a 280Z - or the other way round? What do you have to do then? Is that even possible?

As already written above: Rather worse than right. I've already gone through this process and then discarded it. There are too many little things to do - the best way is actually always to look for a suitable speedometer.

The differences can be seen in detail in the following places:

  • The black housings and the position of the holes show the differences between the speedometers for the 240Z and everything that comes after it.
  • When installed, the difference can also be recognized by the month points. Left 240Z, right 260Z/280Z.
  • Even if the dial is the same, you can see the difference on the front. The 260Z and 280Z up to mid-1975 have a hole for a screw in the upper area. The 240Z does not have this.
